Can ChatGPT Write In Other Languages?

There is a lot of talk and excitement about GPT-4 this week, quite understandably.

People are saying that GPT-4 will be "multimodal" and will able to take input in one language and give output in another.

And I've heard people say that ChatGPT can't do that, and that ChatGPT can only respond in English.

So I've decided to set the record straight, because I know from experience that ChatGPT can take input in English and give output in other languages, and it does a good job too.

The proof

Here are some examples of mine. Feel free to give it a try yourself with ChatGPT.

Poetry

Me:
Write me a short poem about frogs. Please write the poem in Spanish.

ChatGPT:
La rana salta
entre hojas verdes
su canto encanta
en la noche al verte.

School reports

Me:
Please write me a school science report about David. He works hard, is good at experiments, and participates well in class. He needs to improve his graph drawing.

Please write the report in German.

ChatGPT:

Facts

Me:

ChatGPT: Sure! The largest animal in the world is the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus). Blue whales can grow up to 30 meters in length and weigh up to 200 tons.

Conclusion

There you have it.

  • ChatGPT can write in other languages.
  • ChatGPT can take instructions and information in English and write in other languages.
  • ChatGPT can take instructions in other languages and write in English.

Disclaimer: I speak Spanish and German reasonably well, but I'm not a native speaker. So whilst those responses look good to me, I stand to be corrected if anyone thinks they're bad - send corrections to [email protected].
